Blërg.
It is perhaps one of our larger ‘whoopsie-daisy’ moments, we’ve just discovered that we’ve all been pronouncing IKEA wrong.
And misery loves company so come along as we share the news of our collective failure.
We noticed the reveal thanks to YouTuber MacDoesIt who shared the info via Twitter, casually dropping the hard truth of our ignorance in 280 characters or less.
So IKEA is pronounced like (EE-key-uh) not (EYE-key-uh) and no one was gonna tell me?

“So IKEA is pronounced like (EE-key-uh) not (EYE-key-uh) and no one was gonna tell me?” he wrote – which is technically a little incorrect – it’s EE-kay-uh.
But, it isn’t all bad news.
The word has technically been adapted for English-speaking audiences, heck ads and even the below translation guide all say ‘EYE-key-uh’ as an acceptable alternative…
But it still stings, ya know?
We also stumbled upon this little tidbit which explains the capitalisation of IKEA (and proves it’s not shouty caps as we assumed):
Because it’s the acronym of the founders, and one of the founder is Ingvard Kamprad (which pronounce with EE)
The more you know ✨✨

All in all, it’s been a big day for learning about IKEA.
